On May 19-24, 2017, science experiment of wheat rust and locust for the Sino-UK project “Integrating Advanced Earth Observation and Environmental Information for Sustainable Management of Crop Pests and Diseases” were conducted in Dongying of Shandong, Langfang of Hebei, and Xilinhot of Inner Mongolia, and then the project 2nd workshop was held in Beijing.

This workshop was co-chaired by China PI Prof. HUANG Wenjiang from RADI and UK PI Prof. Belinda Luke from CAB International (CABI). Experts from 19 China and UK institutions and universities attended this workshop, including Research Councils UK Office in China (RCUK), Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) of UK, British Embassy in China, CABI, Rothamsted Research, King’s College London, Assimila LTD from the UK side, and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Rural Center of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), National Agro-Tech Extension and Service Center of Ministry of Agriculture (NATESC), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), Zhejiang University, RADI and National Aviation Plant Protection Science and Technology Innovation Alliance (NAPP), etc. from the China side. In the workshop, Dr. Andy Shaw from STFC and Glen Noble from RCUK delivered speeches , confirming the achievements made by Chinese and British scientists in crop pest and disease monitoring, forecasting and management.

Prof. HUANG Wenjiang introduced the main tasks, progresses, and future plans of the project, and showed the self-developed ‘Crop Disease and Pest Monitoring and Forecasting System’ and products, which includes pest/disease thematic maps, national and regional scientific reports, etc. Prof. Belinda reported the application of biological pesticides in pests and diseases control. Dr. Yufei Li, Dr. Jingquan Zhu from NATESC, Prof. Zehua Zhang from CAAS, Ms. Yanhua Meng from NAPP, and Dr. Jon Style from Assimila also invited to give presentations about agricultural remote sensing technologies and applications. Attendees discussed the trend of monitoring, forecasting and management of crop pests and diseases, biological mechanisms of diseases epidemiology, methods and technologies for pest and disease loss assessment, and the applications of biological pesticides, also the challenges of integrating earth observation technologies to early forecast, timely and temporally monitor, scientific control and assessment yield loss for crop pests and diseases.

The Sino-UK project focuses on carrying out theoretical research and technical application on pest and disease monitoring, forecasting, and management, through the joint researches, aiming to enhancing pest and disease forecasting precision and green protection efficiency, furthermore to provide references for national and global food security, and agricultural sustainable development.
