IRDR China Holds 2018 Annual Meeting

2018 IRDR China Annual Meeting was held in Beijing on March 27, attended by over 40 leaders and experts from CAST, CAS, IRDR IPO and IRDR China Secretariat. This meeting was chaired by Prof. GUO Huadong, CAS Academician and the chair of IRDR China.

WANG Qinglin, deputy director of International Communication Department of CAST, delivered a report about the vision of international collaboration of science and technology organizations.

HAN Qunli, Executive Director of IPO, introduced the main achievements and future plans of IRDR. Prof. CHEN Fang, the secretary-general of IRDR China, reported the 2017 Annual Report of IRDR China.

Six working groups of IRDR China delivered their reports on related tasks. The working groups, namely Integrated Research on Earthquake and Geologic Disaster Risk, Integrated Research on Flood and Drought Risk, Integrated Research on Cyclone Risk, Integrated Research on Climate Change Induced Disaster Risk, Integrated Research on Urban Disaster Risk, and Assessment of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk of China, dedicated to undertaking and participate national or international science and technology programmes and projects, publishing high-quality academic papers and policy briefs, and proposing, creating, and using new applications and tools.

The meeting featured in-depth discussions on how to promote the integrated research on disaster and risk within the concept of IRDR China. Experts from various disciplines proposed several scientific problems and research objectives in order to better serve the DRR in national, regional and global levels as a think tank.

Prof. Guo wrapped up the meeting and emphasized the contribution of science and technology to the implementation of SFDRR and SDGs. He also pointed out the role IRDR China as a think tank of RADI-led Digital Belt and Road Programthrough helping to formulate a complete Disaster Risk Assessment Index System related to the Belt and Road regions.

The Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) is a decade-long research programme co-sponsored by the International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

It is a global, multi-disciplinary approach to dealing with the challenges brought by natural disasters, mitigating their impacts, and improving related policy-making mechanisms. Core funding for IRDR is provided by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). IRDR International Programme Office is hosted by RADI.
