Between September 23 and 26, the 3rd China National Seminar on Imaging Spectroscopy for Earth Observation was held in Xi’an. Over 220 experts and scholars from 45 organizations both at home and abroad attended the seminar.

The seminar consists of 11 plenary sessions and 108 parallel sessions, focusing on Pavia hyper-spectral dataset, hyper-spectral signal and graphic processing, detection of hyper-spectral abnormalities, hyper-spectral imaging information degradation mechanism and restoration technologies, signal processing decomposition of mixed pixels in the perspective of signal processing, small sample hyper-spectral remote sensing image terrain classification, the latest development of imaging spectrum technologies, applications of compressive sensing in computed spectral imaging technologies, meta-analysis and its applications in determination of plant pigment by hyper-spectral remote sensing.

In addition, 12 group reports were arranged at three parallel sessions on instrument measurement and pretreatment, image classification, target detection, feature extraction and demixing, machine learning and compression, image fusion as well as the application of hyper-spectral data.

TONG Qingxi, CAS Academician, indicated that China has not yet formed a complete hyper-spectral system and data acquisition is still the weakest link in the researches on hyper-spectrum. For this reason, scientists shall not only lay emphasis on the development of large-scale instruments and equipments and researches on hyper-spectral Earth Observation for the aerospace sector, but also focus on the development of small instruments and equipments and researches on near-ground hyper-spectral observation. China needs to promote and apply hyper-spectral technologies in all aspects involving state security, people’s livelihood, and commercialization, so as to convert science and technology into productivity in a true sense.

Prof. ZHANG Bing, Director of CAS Laboratory of Digital Earth Science and chair of the seminar, made a summary at the closing ceremony and announced that the 4th China National Seminar on Imaging Spectroscopy for Earth Observation will be held in Harbin in 2017.

China National Seminar on Imaging Spectroscopy for Earth Observation was initiated by the Specialized Committee for Imaging Spectral Earth Observation under the Chinese National Committee of the International Society for Digital Earth (CNISDE) in 2011. The first China National Seminar on Imaging Spectroscopy for Earth Observation was held in Beijing in 2011 and the second China National Seminar on Imaging Spectroscopy for Earth Observation was held in Nanjing in 2013. Dubbed as “Chinese WHISPERS” by foreign counterparts, the seminars showcased the hyper-spectral remote sensing technologies and the latest scientific and technological achievements of China, promoted academic exchanges, and made a positive impact throughout the country.
