The first “IEEE Fellow Academic Forum”, organized by IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) chapter at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), was held on May 8, attended by some 40 students from the CAS institutes. This forum was supported by the State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science, IEEE Beijing section, IEEE Student Branch of UCAS, and the Strategy Planning Department and Graduate Union of RADI.

This forum was made up of an academic lecture and an interview with Prof. SHI Jiancheng, a researcher of RADI and IEEE fellow well-known for his research in hydrological cycle by remote sensing. Prof. Shi delivered a speech titled “Introduce to the Global Water Cycle Observation Mission (WCOM)”, which focused on the analysis of the available remote sensor configurations and the important observation elements for a better understanding of the global climate change. The “WCOM” program, as the first exploration plan for Earth science in China, is proposed by RADI as well as National Space Science Center (NSSC), Chinese Academy of Sciences.

During the interview followed his lecture, Prof. Shi talked about his overseas experience as a young student in the US, the experience he thought was important for cultivate independent thinking. He also encouraged the students to cultivate interests in different fields while devoting themselves to the specialty.

IEEE GRSS student branch chapter at University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is affiliated with RADI. It was founded in July, 2013 with a goal to foster both the academic and professional interactions between local student members and IEEE, especially GRSS in the realm of geo-sciences and remote sensing.
