A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between RADI and Chouaib Doukkali University of Morocco to boost bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the field of Earth observation and water sources monitoring under the framework of Digital Belt and Road (DBAR) initiative.

The MOU is signed during an African visit of CAS delegation to Morocco and Mauritania on April 14 -17. Led by Prof. WANG Enge, CAS Vice President, the delegation comprised of scientists from CAS institutes, including two RADI researchers, Prof. ZHANG Bing, Deputy Director of RADI and Prof. JIA Li, head of RADI’s water circle division.

The delegation made tours on such places including the Chouaib Doukkali University of Morocco, the Moroccan Sustainable Energy Agency (MASEN), the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Mauritania, as well as the Agency of Green Great Wall of Africa.

During the visit, Prof. Zhang made a report on remote sensing technology and applications, introduced the latest research of remote sensing monitoring in solar energy infrastructure and the ecological environment.

Prof. Jia gave a report on the application of Earth observation technology in the field of water resources based on the "Digital Silk Road", (DBAR) initiative. Prof. Jia briefed current research on the driving mechanism of land use / land cover and water resources change in the African Sahelian transition zone, a project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Chouaib Doukkali University of Morocco is a member of DBAR initiative, also the host of 2018 Digital Earth Summit. In the future, the two sides hope to solve the problem of water scarcity in Morocco by using remote sensing technology, combining with China’s experience in water conservation and data sharing under the DBAR-Water framework, therefore serving the United Nations 2030 sustainable development goals.

Prof. Zhang, on behalf of RADI, signs an MOU with Chouaib Doukkali University.
