A Chinese delegation led by Prof. GU Xingfa, Executive Deputy Director of RADI were invited to attend a bilateral meeting on the Asia-Oceania GEOSS Initiative (AOGEOSS) held in Sydney on April 7. The Australian counterparts of the meeting are Geoscience Australia and the National Science and Industry Research Organization (CSIRO).

AOGEOSS, is a GEO Initiative launched in November 2016. Co-led by Australia, China and Japan, the initiative intends to establish an effective cooperation framework at regional level and promote the Earth observation capacity of Asia-Oceania countries to confront the challenges which threaten the sustainable development of the region.

The participants of the meeting included Stuart Minchin, Department Director of Environmental Geography under the Australian Geosciences, David Hudson, Head of AOGEOSS Australia, Adam Lewis , Head of National Oceanic and Earth Observation Research, Jonathon Ross, Executive Director of International Satellite Earth Observation Committee (CEOS), Trevor Dhu, Director of DataCube Project, Dr. Alex Held from CSIRO , Andy Stevens, Head of Marine and Marine Ecology Research, Prof. TANG Danling from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology under CAS, and scientists from RADI.

The two sides reviewed the cooperation between China and Australia in the field of Earth observation, exchanged ideas on promoting technical cooperation on the implementation of the Asia-Pacific integrated Earth observation system, promoted data sharing of Earth Observation in the Asia-Pacific region. Both sides also discussed the application of DataCube and the joint verification of remote sensing products. Both sides agreed on boosting the scope of bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, Prof. Gu presented a Collection of Annual Report on Remote Sensing Monitoring of Global Ecosystem and Environment to Australian counterparts. Collaborated by the National Remote Sensing Center of China, a research team, in which several research groups of RADI get involved, has been set up to engage in a task for remote sensing monitoring global ecosystem and environment. The research results have got wide domestic attention and are highly appraised by the international colleagues.
