The commencement of the 5th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) National Academies of Sciences Summer School for Young Scientists on Remote Sensing Technology and Applications (5SCO NASS) was held at RADI’s Kashi Campus in Xinjiang Province on August 5.

In order to promote the cooperation in science and technology among the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member and observer countries, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) launched the SCO National Academies of Sciences Summer School for Young Scientists in 2009, and four summer schools have been held since then.

The 5th summer school was organized by RADI’s Kashi Research Center in partnership with the CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence on Space Technology for Disaster Mitigation (SDIM). 19 representatives from 7 SCO member countries and observer countries (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Mongolia, Iran and China, etc.) attended the 18-day training courses.

Eighteen renowned scientists from France, Germany, Japan, the UK, the US and China gave lectures on development and application of theories and technologies of Earth observation and shared their knowledge, expertise and information with the participants, involving basic theories and methods of remote sensing as well as their applications in the fields of exploration and assessment of mineral products and energy resources, disaster mitigation, agricultural and ecological environment, global changes, research on and management of water resources, land cover and land utilization, as well as protection of natural and cultural heritages, etc.

During the training, the participants learned the method for operation of remote sensing image processing software and GIS-related software. The summer school also includes a five-day field trip to study visit natural landscapes including alpine glaciers, plateau lakes, rivers, wetlands and deserts as well as Tajik scenery and field stations for scientific observations in the neighborhood of Kashi.

Under the framework of SCO, the 5th summer school is designed to cultivate youth talents in relevant fields in Central Asia and neighboring countries, and help them to improve remote sensing scientific & technological capabilities, set up a network of academic exchange and develop teams for long-term strategic cooperation with China.
